South African hip hop is getting another major moment on the global stage as Yanga Chief joins some of Africa and the UK’s most exciting hip hop voices for the return of the Hennessy Cypher 2026.

The latest Cypher brings together six artists from across the continent and the UK, with Nigerian super producer Sarz leading the production. Representing South Africa, Yanga Chief becomes the third South African rapper to feature in the Hennessy Cypher, following in the footsteps of Maglera Doe Boy and A Reece.

This year’s lineup also features Cameroon’s Tenor, Côte d’Ivoire’s Suspect 95, Ghana’s Kwesi Arthur, Kenya’s Fena Gitu and British Nigerian rapper Enny, creating a cross continental meeting point for different sounds, cultures and approaches to hip hop.

For Yanga Chief, the moment is about more than simply being part of another major collaboration. It is an opportunity to represent South Africa while staying true to the identity and sound that have made him one of the country’s most distinctive voices.

And with Sarz at the helm, the production promises to be just as important as the talent on the mic. The Cypher stays rooted in the foundations of hip hop while bringing together different flows, lyrical traditions and cultural perspectives, creating a sound that looks towards the next chapter of African hip hop.

The collaboration is also a continuation of Hennessy’s long standing relationship with hip hop. The brand says it has been referenced in more than 58,000 songs, making it one of the most recognisable spirit brands within music history.

First launched in Nigeria in 2011, the Hennessy Cypher has grown into a platform dedicated to musical innovation and cultural storytelling, giving artists a space to collaborate, express their identities and showcase their lyrical ability on an international stage.

With Yanga Chief carrying the South African flag and six distinct voices coming together under Sarz’s production, the Hennessy Cypher 2026 is shaping up to be another major celebration of where African hip hop is today and where it could be heading next.
